Lolita's Personality

They must spend at least two to three hours a day outdoors to stimulate their minds and get physical exercise. They enjoy playing games, experimenting with tricks and listening to music. They also enjoy going to parks and playgrounds as well as hiking and going to local restaurants and bars. They are not just a wonderful pet, but they are is also a great pet for children.
The birds can be quite loud, despite their affection for them. They can also be a nuisance for those living nearby. They are capable of ear-shattering calls and screech-calls, which can be a nuisance in condominiums and apartments, or in close proximity to children who might be scared by their noise.

Lolita's Care
For years activists have been calling for the retirement of Lolita's tricks at Miami Seaquarium and relocation to an open sea pen. After the 1993 hit movie Free Willy stirred public outrage over orca Keiko's reintegration into the wild, marine biologists hoped Lolita could suffer a similar fate. Sadly, she never had a chance to return to the sea.
The captors of Lolita, referred to as the Dolphin Company, have ignored veterinary recommendations and continued to put her at risk. They are a danger to her health by forcing Lolita to perform for tourists. They over-exert her with high-speed circles and head-first dives, exposing her to chlorine and cause her to lose weight. In addition, they keep her in an incredibly small tank that is only one-and-a-half times the size of her natural habitat.
Fortunately, in 2022 the new owner of Miami Seaquarium pledged to work with an organization of Lolita advocates called Friends of Toki and the Lummi tribe who view her as an ancestor and plan to eventually transport her to open water. The plan included a facility in Washington's westcoast, where she could spend the rest of her days, receive human care, and be monitored by scientists. The sanctuary pen was expected to be hundreds of time larger than her Miami home and was surrounded by ocean, but not concrete tanks.
If the plan had been implemented, Lolita (also known as Tokitae or Toki) might still be alive today. In the wild, killers whales are social animals and are close to their family members until death. After years of pressure from PETA and others and the Miami Seaquarium has finally released Lolita to a sanctuary at the sea where she can take a deep dive in the ocean and possibly even be reconnect with her orca mother. These plans came too late to save the beloved whale, which passed away on Friday due to what was thought to be a kidney problem.
